CALL OF MOUNTAINS: Adventure Tourism Guidebook

After more than 8 years of studying and drafting work, CALL OF MOUNTAINS – ADVENTURE TOURISM GUIDEBOOK was published on January 2019 and presented to the public in February 2019. Several dozen adventurers, representatives of local sport federations and NGOs participated in the event and book signing ceremony which was held at IBIS Yerevan City Center Hotel.

Although several other books about mountaineering and hiking were published in Armenian during the Soviet Union, CALL OF MOUNTAINS is the first in its type and nature; it incorporates UIAA‘s safety guidelines along with international best practices in health and safety risk management & mitigation in a simplified format, understandable for a wide range of age groups and experience level.

The Guidebook is consisted of seven chapters. It starts with Planning, which incorporates approaches and methodologies such as globally well-known Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) continuous improvement model and risk management practices. Planning adventures ahead is a must for everyone! Therefore, the reader will also learn about how to Navigate in nature, using the modern devices and/or conventional topographic maps. There is also a chapter dedicated to Survival techniques in nature, where several possible scenarios, principals and practices to survive those conditions are explained.

Knowing the Wildlife and the Flora is essential when planning your adventures. These along with Weather conditions and associated risks are described in detail.

The final chapter of the Guidebook is entitled Health & Safety, which in simple words describes mountain medicine for all levels. However, the focus of this chapter is not the First Aid, but conditions adventurers might face during expeditions and in high altitudes.
