Raising awareness of students

On December 23 and 24, hundred and twenty students from general schools of Yerevan participated in “Students for Climate” series of events organized at premises of SOLARON – Manufacturer of solar PV modules, under the EU funded “EU4 Yerevan – Solar Community” project.

After welcoming each group of 30 students, participants took a quiz in order to evaluate their initial knowledge and awareness about climate change; participants took the same quiz at the end of the event in order to re-evaluate their level of awareness.

As an ice-breaking participants watched an animated movie about climate change and the impact of the mankind’s behavior right after the first quiz, which was followed by open discussion during which participants expressed their view point of climate change and how the mankind can mitigate that.

Considering the level of awareness of participants about climate change, global warming, energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions, the organizers of the event revisited the topics planned to be discussed and focused on topics such as sustainable development and financing.

“Such a global issue the mankind faces requires participation of all stakeholders globally, that is why you – the young generation, are invited to Students4Climate which will trigger your participation in further actions on climate change to be organized by Yerevan Municipality”, said Njdeh Andreas, the senior expert of the project.

Moreover, participants were introduced to “EU4 Yerevan – Solar Community” and other similar EU funded projects realized in Armenia. “Yerevan – Solar Community is implemented under the EU Programme ‘Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects’ (CoM-DeP), therefore, it is a demonstration project in order to assess opportunities to replicate and scale up such projects in other communities of Armenia”, said Nana Abelyan, the project manager.

Participants also visited SOLARON’s manufacturing line of solar PV modules, where they were introduced to the process and how solar PV systems work.

“EU encourages Armenia to continue with the reform agenda under the Comprehensive and Enhanced partnership Agreement. Putting in place strategies (e.g. education strategy) for this Energy Efficiency-Renewable Energy Sources investment and ongoing and proposed flagships is essential. So, we need to educate kids and persuade people that going green is one solution they could do to help improve the environment and reduce energy usage thus cutting down the CO2 emissions.” said Mr. Frank Hess, EU Head of Cooperation.

Raising awareness of students

Students4Climate is a continuous process as part of which students were assigned to write and submit an essay entitled “How to reduce the impact of my school/community on climate” until January 08, 2022. The Project Team has already reviewed all essays and has shortlisted the best three essays.
