On April 30, 2022 Armenia’s first community-owned solar PV plant with 600 kW AC capacity (713 kW DC) was connected to the national grid in Artik, Shirak Province.

The 600 kW solar PV plant was developed under the EU-funded EU for Armenia’s Sustainable Energy Project and intends to develop and demonstrate a replicable model of community-owned solar PV investments which will be adopted by other communities in Armenia and will promote and enhance utilization of renewable sources of energy, reduce environmental impact and formulate new financial resources for communities.

The PV plant is not the only outcome of this Project. The all-out efforts of #ESF_Armenia‘s project team resulted in amendments in the Energy Law and allocating 15 MW of the 315 MW commercial licenses to development of community-owned PV plants. This along with the recently introduced competitive electricity market in Armenia, opens up new opportunities for investments and diversification of the energy market.

Let’s remind that 1440 pieces of 495-watt bi-facial solar PV modules and 10 units of 60 kW solar inverters are installed at 600kW Artik solar PV plant. The annual energy yield is estimated around 1334 MW-hours which will reduce annual CO2 emissions around 570 tones.

A como-fund is established to deposit and manage the annual revenue(s), estimated around 22 million AMD (45,000 USD), which will be invested in renewable energy and energy efficiency retrofits by “Artik Solar Plant” Community Non-Commercial Organization.

Let’s be reminded that under the program “Covenant of Mayor – Demonstration projects” EU4 Armenia Sustainable Energy Program (EU4ASEP) promotes renewable energy investments in Aparan and Artik towns in Armenia. The project is implemented by “Energy Saving Foundation” (ESF) and the “Union of Communities of Armenia” (UCA), as well as the partner municipalities.
